Derivation of regional hazardous doses for amphibians acutely exposed to ionising radiation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Estimation of 50% lethal doses from nuclear DNA contents and subsequent species sensitivity distribution analysis was performed to derive regional 5% hazardous doses (HD5) for major orders Anura (e.g., frogs) and Caudata (e.g., salamanders) of amphibians inhabiting Japan, Australia, France, Czech Republic, Canada and some US states, where nuclear power plants or uranium mines are located. The HD5 values ranged from 3.0 to 7.7Gy for the Anura inhabiting there while they ranged from 2.9 to 4.6Gy for the Caudata. Comparison of these results with the worldwide HD5s (5.3Gy for the Anura and 3.3Gy for the Caudata) suggests that benchmark values for the Asian and Oceanic Anura and the European Caudata can be set at higher doses than the global values. Regional differences should be, therefore, considered when benchmark values are derived for some taxonomic groups.

Internal Low Dose Ionising Radiation in Pregnant Mice: Behavioral Effects in the Offspring
Most of the population living in areas close to the Chernobyl accident have been exposed to external and internal low doses of ionising radiation. High doses effects are well known, however low dose radiations had not been yet investigated. The aim of this work was to investigate the cognitive effects of internal low doses ionising radiation. We evaluate the behaviour in mice pups after that pr...

The aim of this study was to provide data on genetic hazards associated with occupational exposure to low doses of ionising radiation in nuclear medicine departments. The DNA damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of medical staff was assessed using the chromosome aberration test. Altogether 120 subjects (60 exposed and 60 controls) participated in the study. The exposed subjects showed signifi...

OBJECTIVE To determine whether exposure to low doses of ionising radiation in infancy affects cognitive function in adulthood. DESIGN Population based cohort study. SETTING Sweden. PARTICIPANTS 3094 men who had received radiation for cutaneous haemangioma before age 18 months during 1930-59. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Radiation dose to frontal and posterior parts of the brain, and associatio...
متن کاملAn Introduction to the Estimation of Risks Arising from Exposure to Low Doses of Ionising Radiation
Exposure to ionising radiation leads to a radiation dose. The main health effect of low levels of radiation dose is an increase in the chance of developing cancer. The radiation risk factor quantifies the level of risk caused by a given amount of radiation dose, i.e. there will be an X% risk of getting cancer per unit of dose received. This document provides an introduction to the risks from ex...

Risk estimates for radiation-induced cancer in humans are based on epidemiological data largely drawn from the Japanese atomic bomb survivor studies, which received an acute high dose rate (HDR) ionising radiation. Limited knowledge exists about the effects of chronic low dose rate (LDR) exposure, particularly with respect to the application of the dose and dose rate effectiveness factor. As pa...
